Bulky Waste Collection — Several Items, Collected From Inside, on a Day That Suits You
CL Clearances is a private, licensed alternative to the council's bulky collection. Instead of dragging a sofa, a mattress and a broken wardrobe out to the drive and waiting for the crew, you send a photo, get a fixed written price, and Charlotte collects the lot from the rooms they are in. Based in Howden, DN14, trading since 2016, covering East Riding, Hull, Goole, Selby, York, Doncaster, Barnsley, Wakefield and North Lincolnshire.

What counts as bulky waste?
Bulky waste is anything from a household that is too big or too heavy to go in a wheelie bin: furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpets and the awkward one-offs that collect in a spare room. We treat it as a bulky waste collection when several pieces go at once — typically two to five large items, or a few with some bags alongside.
The items we collect most often:
- Sofas, armchairs and sofa beds
- Mattresses, divan bases and bed frames — any size, from the bedroom they are in
- Wardrobes, chests of drawers and dressers — dismantled on site if they will not go through the door
- Fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers — taken to a WEEE-approved treatment site
- Washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and cookers — recycled as scrap metal
- TVs, carpets and underlay, exercise equipment and garden furniture
If there is only one item, single item collection covers it, and our sofa, mattress and furniture removal page lists the per-item prices. If it is a whole room, garage or house of mixed junk, rubbish removal prices it by the van load instead.
How is this different from the council's bulky collection?
CL Clearances differs from the council service in three ways: we carry the items out of the house ourselves, we book a date with you rather than giving you the next free slot on a round, and we take fridges and freezers on the same visit. Council crews collect from outside — the drive, the front garden or the property boundary — and will not come indoors, into a garage or up the stairs.
From the room, not the kerb
A mattress in a back bedroom and a wardrobe on the landing are carried out by us. Nothing is dragged outside first.
A date you choose
Around Howden and Goole, usually within the week, on a day agreed with you — not the next slot on a round.
Fridges on the same trip
Some councils run fridges as a separate service or report delays. We take them with everything else.
No item count to stay under
Council fees cover a set number of items. Our price follows what is there — per item, or by van space for more.
The council is cheaper if your items are already outside and you can wait. We are the option when they are upstairs, the date matters, or the council will not take something.
What do the local councils charge for bulky waste collection?
Each council's own price, item allowance and collection rules for a standard bulky collection, taken from its website and checked October 2026. Charges are reviewed every year, so follow the council's link before booking.
| Council | Standard charge | Items included | Where the crew collects from | How to book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| East Riding of Yorkshire Council | £43 (from 1 April 2026); £86 for 6–10 items | 1–5 standard items | Outside on the ground floor of your property; crews cannot enter the home, garage, shed or outbuildings | Online, after registering |
| Hull City Council | One free collection per 12 months; extra collections from £5 | Up to 5 single items (DIY items always charged) | Within the property boundary — driveway, side of the house or garden nearest the road; not from tenfoots | Online booking form |
| City of York Council | £33.50; £55.50 for 4–10 items | 1–3 items | Outside by 7am, somewhere the crew can reach such as a driveway or garden; crews do not enter the property | By phone, 01904 551551 |
| North Yorkshire Council (covers Selby) | £37 minimum charge | Up to 2 items | Outside, at the closest point to the main road; not in a garage, shed or outbuilding | Online; date usually within three weeks of booking |
| Wakefield Council | £35 per collection | Up to 3 items | Not stated on the council's page | Online via MyAccount |
| Barnsley Council | £28, then £8.75 per extra item | Up to 2 standard items (12 maximum) | Within the property boundary, not blocking the pavement | Online account; collected within 12 working days of payment |
In every case the council price assumes you get the items outside yourself. Doncaster and North Lincolnshire also run bulky collections; check their websites for current charges.
How much does bulky waste collection cost?
With CL Clearances, a bulky waste collection of two to five items costs the sum of our per-item prices, with the second and later items on the same visit discounted; beyond that, it is priced by the space the load takes in the van. These are our 2026 guide prices, collected from inside the property within about 15 miles of Howden. Hull, Beverley, York, Doncaster and Scunthorpe add a small travel element, included in the fixed quote.
| Item or load | Guide price (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Two-seater sofa or armchair | £50 – £70 | Second item on the same visit from £25 |
| Three-seater or corner sofa | £70 – £110 | Corner units in two or three pieces at no extra cost |
| Mattress (any size) | £40 – £60 | Divan base £25 – £40 extra |
| Bed frame, wardrobe, chest of drawers | £45 – £90 | Dismantling included |
| Fridge, freezer or fridge-freezer | £60 – £90 | Includes the WEEE treatment fee |
| Washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, cooker | £45 – £65 | Disconnect and drain beforehand where possible |
| Minimum load (about 1/6 of the van) | £90 – £130 | A few bits of furniture, or 6–8 bin bags |
| Quarter load | £140 – £180 | The contents of one room, or a bulky item run with bags |
| Half load | £220 – £280 | A flat's worth of clutter, or a full garage |
When appliances go as part of a van load, fridges and freezers add £15–£25 each for WEEE disposal, and washing machines, dryers and cookers go as scrap at no extra charge. Charlotte quotes and attends every job, and the written price is the price you pay. Bigger loads are on the rubbish removal price table.
What can't you take?
CL Clearances cannot take asbestos, gas cylinders, wet paint and solvents, clinical or hazardous waste, or vehicle tyres in bulk. Everything else that normally comes out of a house — including the fridges, freezers and broken furniture some council services turn away or charge separately for — can go on the van.
Not sure about an item? WhatsApp a photo to 07783 430775 and Charlotte will tell you before you book.
Why the carrier matters. Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, a householder has a duty of care to pass their waste only to someone authorised to take it. If an unlicensed collector fly-tips your sofa, the fine can come back to you (gov.uk: dispose of household waste). CL Clearances is an Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier, licence CBDU291452, which you can check on the public register before we arrive. We carry public liability insurance, and a Waste Transfer Note is available on request.

Bulky waste collection FAQs
Is a private bulky waste collection more expensive than the council?
Usually, yes. A council collection is a fixed fee for a set number of items left outside — East Riding charges £43 for up to five, York £33.50 for up to three. CL Clearances charges per item or by van space because we carry everything out from inside, on a date you choose, including fridges. If your items are already outside and you can wait, the council is the cheaper route.
How many items can you take in one bulky collection?
There is no fixed cap. Two to five large items are priced individually, with a discount for the second and later items on the same visit. Beyond that, we price by the space the load takes in the van, which is usually cheaper than adding item prices together.
Will you take items the council will not collect?
In most cases. Depending on the area, councils exclude things such as builder's waste, radiators, pianos or commercial fridges. We take fridges, freezers, broken furniture and awkward one-offs; see what we cannot take above.
How do I know my waste will be disposed of legally?
Check our licence, CBDU291452, on the Environment Agency public register, and ask for a Waste Transfer Note. It names CL Clearances, our licence number and the disposal site, and is available on request — landlords and letting agents usually keep one on file.
