Hull City Council's bulky waste collection is chargeable, limited in the number of items, collected from the front boundary on a scheduled day, and — depending on the time of year — booked some weeks ahead. For anyone in a three-storey Avenues terrace, or an upstairs flat off Spring Bank, "from the front boundary" is the difficult part: the collection crew does not come inside, and getting a king-size mattress and a wardrobe down two flights and out to the pavement is the job you were trying to avoid.

Hull's housing is dense and old. The Victorian terraces that make up much of the city west of the river have tenfoots at the back — ten-foot alleys that sometimes take a van and sometimes do not — narrow staircases, cellars, and on-street parking that is permit-controlled in the Avenues and tight almost everywhere. Everything collected goes to a licensed transfer station, where it is separated into wood, metal, card, plastics, textiles and WEEE for recycling; furniture in decent condition is offered to Hull reuse outlets first.
