What the man and van service covers
"Man and van" means a driver, a van and help with the lifting, booked by the hour or by the job. It sits between hiring a van yourself and booking a full removals firm, and for anything up to a two-bedroom house it is usually the cheapest and quickest option.
We take on:

The van is a 3.5-tonne Luton with a tail lift, roughly the capacity of a one-bedroom flat in a single load. For a larger move we do two runs or bring a second pair of hands.
Why a man and van rather than a removals company or self-hire?
Removals companies in York and Hull quote a full crew and a day rate that starts around £400–£600 for a two-bed house. Self-drive van hire is £60–£90 a day plus fuel, insurance excess, and you doing every lift yourself — often with the van due back before the unloading is finished. A man and van is priced for the job you actually have.
You only pay for the hours used

A quick list or a few photos on WhatsApp is enough. Mention stairs, lifts, parking restrictions and anything heavy or fragile.
Get a price and a date
Charlotte quotes hourly or fixed, whichever is cheaper for the job, and holds the date once you confirm.
Loading day
The van arrives in the agreed window with blankets, straps and a trolley. Everything is wrapped, loaded and secured.
Unload and place
Items go into the rooms you want them in, not dumped in the hall. Anything you have decided not to keep leaves on the van.

How much does a man with a van cost in East Yorkshire?
In 2026 a single driver and van around Howden, Goole, Hull and York costs £45–£55 an hour with a two-hour minimum, or £70–£85 an hour with a second person. A local one-bedroom flat move usually comes to £120–£220 all in. Longer moves are quoted as a fixed price so you know the total before the day.
Is it cheaper to hire a van myself?

Are my belongings insured while they are in the van?
Yes. CL Clearances carries goods-in-transit and public liability insurance. Charlotte can send the certificate before the booking. Items are blanket-wrapped and strapped, and fragile boxes travel in the cab if needed.
Will you help carry things up and down stairs?
That is the point of a man and van rather than a van. Charlotte loads and unloads with you, including flats without lifts and awkward staircases. If there is a lot of heavy furniture and stairs at both ends, a second person is added to the booking so nothing gets damaged.
Can you collect something I have bought on Facebook Marketplace or eBay?
Yes — this is a large part of the work. Send the seller's postcode, your postcode and a photo of the item. Charlotte collects, pays on your behalf if you arrange it in advance, and delivers into the room of your choice. Local collections start from £45.
Can you take the old furniture away as well?
Yes, and this is the difference from a removals company. Because CL Clearances is a licensed waste carrier (CBDU291452), anything you are not taking to the new address can go on the same van and be disposed of legally. It is priced as a small rubbish removal add-on.
How far in advance do I need to book?
A week's notice is ideal for a house move; single items and Marketplace collections can often be fitted in within a couple of days. Saturday mornings book up first. If a completion date moves, tell us as soon as you know and we will move with it.
