Rubbish in York — permits, ResPark and the tips
York has two household waste sites, Hazel Court off Hull Road and Towthorpe near Strensall, and for a car-load they work. Vans and trailers need to be registered with City of York Council in advance, and the sites do not take everything. The council's bulky collection is chargeable, takes a limited number of items from the property boundary, and — like most councils — is booked a couple of weeks out.
The bigger issue in York is the street. Skips on the highway need a permit from the council, and in the ResPark zones that cover most of the residential city inside the outer ring road there is often no bay to put one in. The Victorian terraces in South Bank, Holgate, The Groves, Bishophill and Leeman Road are narrow, sometimes one-way, and were built long before vans. Inside the walls the footstreets are closed to vehicles for most of the day.
A van collection avoids all of it.
