Gardens in York — access is the thing to plan
York's gardens are as varied as its housing, but the constant is getting the van close enough. In the ResPark zones that cover most of the residential city inside the outer ring road, the van needs a visitor permit or a dispensation from City of York Council to stop for a working day; in the narrow terraces of South Bank, The Groves and Bishophill it may need to stop at the end of the street and the waste is carried; inside the walls the footstreets close for most of the day. None of it is difficult if it is known in advance, and Charlotte checks the street before quoting.
Clifton, Bootham and Fulford have some of the longest gardens in the city, often with rear access from a back lane and always with a lot of mature growth to take out. Acomb, Dringhouses and the outer estates have side access and are straightforward. The villages have drives and big plots.
City of York Council's garden waste service is subscription-based and takes what fits in the bin; Hazel Court and Towthorpe tips need vans registered. For a garden gone over, a shed to come down or a yard full of mixed rubbish, a licensed collection is simpler. Green waste goes to a composting site, treated timber to wood recycling, metal to scrap, and the rest to a licensed transfer station.
