Business Waste Collection in York — The Loads Your Bin Contract Will Not Take
CL Clearances collects business waste in York that will not go in a trade bin: desks and chairs from an office refit, monitors and printers, shop shelving and counters, café furniture, stock write-offs, piles of cardboard and broken pallets. That covers premises inside the city walls, offices around the station and Clifton Moor, and retail and trade units at Monks Cross and Layerthorpe. Charlotte Leighton runs the business from Howden, about 40 minutes from York. She prices each job, collects it herself and emails the Waste Transfer Note your duty-of-care file needs.

What business waste does CL Clearances collect in York?
CL Clearances collects the bulky, irregular and awkward waste that York businesses produce. The daily refuse belongs in a bin contract. This is the rest:
- Office furniture — workstations, swivel chairs, boardroom tables, storage cabinets and screens (office clearance and removals)
- IT and electricals — PCs, monitors, printers, servers, phones and kitchen appliances, all handled under the WEEE regulations
- Confidential paper — old client files and archive boxes sent for certified shredding, and you get a certificate to prove it
- Shop and café fittings — shelving, racking, counters, display units, signage, flooring, tables and chairs after a refit
- Stock write-offs — damaged, discontinued or returned stock, disposed of and documented
- Packaging and pallets — cardboard, polystyrene, stretch wrap and broken pallets that have built up in the yard or stockroom
- Fit-out and workshop waste — offcuts, scrap metal and bagged rubble (builders waste removal)
- Units handed back full — offices, shops and stores cleared for a landlord or agent after a tenant leaves
CL Clearances is not a hazardous-waste contractor. Chemicals, asbestos, clinical waste and oils are not collected, and you will be told that on the phone, not on the day.

How do you collect from businesses inside York’s footstreets?
By arriving before or after footstreet hours. City of York Council keeps the footstreets closed to most vehicles from 10.30am to 5pm, seven days a week. Some streets have their own rules: on Shambles, loading is only allowed before 10.30am or after 5pm, and on Stonegate only between 5am and 10.30am. A shop on Stonegate or a café off Parliament Street is therefore cleared early in the morning, before the barriers go up. Premises where an evening slot works are done after close.
Outside the walls, the issue is parking rather than barriers. Much of the residential city near the centre is covered by ResPark permit zones, and offices in converted terraces around Bootham, Clifton or Holgate often have no loading bay. Where the van needs a bay suspension or a dispensation from the council, it is arranged in advance and charged at the council’s fee, with no mark-up.
The out-of-town estates are simpler. Units at Clifton Moor, Monks Cross and Layerthorpe usually have a yard or loading door, so collections there can run during the working day.

Which York businesses use a van collection rather than a skip?
Usually businesses without anywhere to put a skip. In a city centre of narrow streets, footstreets and permit zones, a skip on the highway needs a council permit and space that often does not exist. A van loads from the door and leaves.
Shops and cafés refitting
Old counters, shelving and seating out before the fitters start, then their packaging and offcuts out once they finish.
Offices moving or downsizing
Furniture not going to the new premises, retired IT, and archive boxes after a move to digital records.
Landlords and agents
Shops, offices and stores left full by an outgoing tenant, cleared and documented before the next let.
Pubs, restaurants and holiday lets
Furniture, fridges and kitchen equipment replaced during a refurbishment or a change of owner.
Schools, surgeries and care settings
Furniture and equipment replaced in bulk during a holiday or over a weekend, with WEEE and confidential-waste paperwork.
Trades and workshops
Regular runs of pallets, packaging and scrap that a wheelie bin does not cope with.
How much does business waste collection cost in York in 2026?
A one-off business waste collection in York with CL Clearances costs £135–£195 ex VAT for up to a quarter of a van, £240–£320 for half a van and £400–£500 for a full load. Repeat van visits start at £95. WEEE and confidential paper are itemised, and every price is confirmed in writing before the first collection. The figures include the drive from Howden, so they run a little above our M62-corridor rates.
| Collection | Typical York scope | Guide price (ex VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Small collection (up to 1/4 van) | A café’s old tables, two or three desks, a stockroom of flattened boxes | £135 – £195 |
| Half van | A small office, or a shop refit inside the walls | £240 – £320 |
| Full van load | A floor of office furniture at Clifton Moor, a unit clear-out at Monks Cross | £400 – £500 |
| Multi-load clearance | Whole premises over several visits | From £120 per load on a fixed total |
| Electrical and IT equipment (WEEE) | A bank of old screens and base units, a till system, a staff-room fridge | From £8 per item; fridges £20 – £30 |
| Confidential paper for shredding | Archive boxes or full sacks, destruction certificate supplied | From £6 per sack |
| Scheduled repeat van visit | Weekly, fortnightly or monthly pick-up of packaging, pallets or bulky waste | From £95 per visit |
Bay suspensions or dispensations, where a street needs one, are passed on at the council’s fee. Clean cardboard, pallets and scrap metal have recycling value and can bring a load price down, so say what is in the pile when you ask for a quote.
How is a York business collection arranged?
Photos and the address
Most quotes are done from photos. The exact street matters in York, because it decides when the van can stop.
Written quote and timing
A fixed price, how WEEE and confidential waste will be handled, the paperwork you will get, and a slot that fits the footstreet hours or your trading day.
Collection
Early morning, after close or at the weekend for premises that cannot have a van outside while they trade.
Documents
Waste Transfer Note, WEEE details and a certificate of destruction where it applies, emailed the same day.
Do you replace a York trade bin contract?
No, and you will usually want both. City of York Council runs its own commercial waste collection service with bins or pre-paid trade sacks for refuse, dry recycling and food waste, and private waste firms offer bin contracts too. One of those is the right answer for the bags and bins a business fills every day. Under the Simpler Recycling rules, workplaces in England with ten or more employees already have to keep paper and card, other dry recyclables and food waste apart from general waste, and smaller businesses follow from 31 March 2027.
CL Clearances covers what a bin round does not: the desk being replaced, the shopfit that comes out in a day, the pallets stacked behind the unit, and the whole office when a lease ends. Collections are one-off or on a repeat van visit, never a wheeled-bin round. The same duty of care applies to both, so whoever collects should be registered and should give you a Waste Transfer Note.
Is CL Clearances licensed to take business waste in York?
Yes. CL Clearances holds Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier licence CBDU291452 and public liability insurance. Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, a business must hand its waste only to an authorised carrier and keep the Waste Transfer Note for two years. Every York collection comes with one, and a copy of the licence is available before you book. The commercial waste guide explains what counts as business waste.

How much does business waste collection cost in York?
In 2026 a one-off collection in York is £135–£195 ex VAT for up to a quarter of a van, £240–£320 for half and £400–£500 for a full load, including travel from Howden. Repeat van visits start at £95. WEEE is from £8 an item and confidential paper from £6 a sack.
Can you collect from a shop inside the city walls?
Yes. The footstreets are closed to most vehicles from 10.30am to 5pm, so central collections are booked for early morning or after close. Some streets, such as Stonegate and Shambles, have their own loading windows, and the job is planned around them.
Do I get a Waste Transfer Note?
Yes. Every York collection comes with one, emailed the same day. It records what was taken, how much, our carrier licence number and the site it went to, and you should keep it on file for two years.
Can you take old computers and monitors?
Yes. IT equipment goes to an approved treatment facility under the WEEE regulations. If it holds data, you can take the drives out first, or physical destruction with a certificate can be arranged.
Do you provide wheelie bins for York businesses?
No. For daily refuse, recycling and food waste you need a bin or sack service, from City of York Council or a private contractor. CL Clearances handles the bulky and one-off waste that bins do not take, as a single collection or a repeat van visit.
Do you cover Clifton Moor and Monks Cross?
Yes, along with the city centre, Layerthorpe, Fishergate, Holgate, Acomb and businesses across the YO postcodes. Units with a yard or loading door can usually be collected from during the working day.
Can you collect outside trading hours?
Yes. Early-morning, evening and weekend slots are normal for York shops, cafés and offices, and in the footstreets they are often the only option. The time is fixed when the quote is agreed.
